Situation:
Friday afternoon at 1600:
The provider received a call from a 67 year-old male patient, recently discharged after a hospital and SNF stay of two (2) weeks. Patient contracted C. diff during this time, extending his stay at the SNF. Now at home, the patient reports explosive bowel movements, weakness, and tachycardia.
The patient is unable to travel, and home-based diagnostic options are a mix of untimely and unavailable. Because the patient reports symptoms associated with serious conditions (COVID, heart attack, etc.), a 911 call and ambulance ride to the hospital are pending.
Case Summary:
Typical treatment is 911 call, ER visit, and admission, likely not discharged until Monday. Cost is $11,200. A single StatPoint visit costs $500. Savings $10,700, ROI = 21.4x
Provider ordered a COVID test, stool sample, and EKG via StatPoint.
Provider mandated that if results are not available tonight, this patient must go to the ER.
Problem:
The patient is unable to travel, and home-based diagnostic options are a mix of untimely and unavailable.
Because the patient reports symptoms associated with serious conditions (COVID, heart attack, etc), a 911 call and ambulance ride to the hospital are pending.
Provider ordered a COVID test, stool sample, and EKG via StatPoint.
Provider mandated that if results are not available tonight, this patient must go to the ER.
Action:
- Rapid COVID test negative at 1900
- EKG was performed and results transmitted to provider by 1915
- PCR COVID swab and stool samples delivered to the laboratory at 2000
- Stool sample negative for C. diff, PCR swab negative.
Discussion:
The patient and the payer avoided the inconvenience and expense of an ER visit because of StatPoint’s ability to respond quickly with a range of tests and evaluations. By mixing StatPoint’s point-of-care tests with immediate delivery of additional specimens to the provider’s lab of choice, results were generated in an actionable timeframe.
The provider was able to rule out more serious complications and allow the patient to continue recovering at home.
